Who we are

The external royalty department we built because we needed one.

We are publishers. We lived the problem. Then we solved it — first for ourselves, and now for independent publishers across North America.

We are the team behind Ingenium Books, an independent publisher founded in 2017 and based in British Columbia.

In the beginning, we managed our own author royalties the way most publishers do — manually, slowly, and with dread at the start of every cycle. The spreadsheet chaos, the distributor files that never agreed, the author emails arriving the day statements went out questioning numbers that were right all along. We knew that pain from the inside.

In 2021, we built our way out of it. We developed a purpose-built royalty engine and standardized our ingest process across every major North American distributor. In 2022, we created a managed service so complete that other publishers started asking us to run it for them too.

That’s Mocenius. Publishers send us their sales files. We return finished, branded author statements and a clean payment file — human-verified, audit-ready, on schedule. No software for your team. No manual data work. No more royalty-period emergencies.

The pains we removed
  • Staff time consumed every cycle — 40 to 80 hours of manual calculation, data wrangling, and statement formatting
  • Distributor files that arrive in incompatible formats and have to be reconciled by hand
  • Author and agent questions that outlast the statements — defending numbers that were right all along
  • Institutional knowledge walking out the door with every staff change
  • Six-month cash flow surprises at period end because nobody tracked liability in between
The gains publishers kept
  • 40–80 hours reclaimed per royalty cycle — returned to editorial, growth, and author relationships
  • Professional, branded author statements that arrive on time and leave nothing to question
  • A specialist third-party paper trail — when anyone disputes a number, you reference an independent process, not a spreadsheet
  • Contract terms and clause history preserved in the system, not in someone’s memory
  • Monthly liability visibility so period end is never a surprise again

We are not software.
We are not a bookkeeper.
We are your royalty department.

Every client works directly with a dedicated Client Manager. You send files. We return results. The only two things on your plate are uploading your sales data and sending your authors their statements.

Human-verified

Every statement passes machine calculation and human review before it leaves our desk. No exceptions.

Publishing-native

We understand escalations, reserves, sub-rights splits, and the author relationships that depend on getting the numbers right.

Audit-ready

Complete, timestamped royalty history maintained for the life of your account. Full data export available on request, always.

Boni Wagner-Stafford
CEO & Co-Founder

Boni is the publisher behind Ingenium Books — the independent press where the Mocenius service was born. She lived the royalty reporting problem firsthand, and when the internal solution she and John built started attracting interest from other publishers, Mocenius became a company. She leads strategic direction and client experience, making sure the service delivers what publishers actually need.

John Wagner-Stafford
System Architect & Co-Founder

John co-founded Ingenium Books with Boni and built the royalty management system that became the engine behind every Mocenius client engagement. Before publishing, he spent two decades in high-stakes production environments — video game producer at Ubisoft Montreal leading a team of 160, recording engineer with artists including Peter Frampton and Leonard Cohen, and soundtrack producer for film and television. He brings the same rigour to data architecture that he brought to a mixing console: every decimal matters, and nothing ships until it’s right.

Morgan Gray
Director of Sales

Morgan leads client development at Mocenius. Before joining the team, he built and managed a B2B client portfolio exceeding $1M in annual revenue and led sales teams in the Canadian office supply sector. His approach is simple: if Mocenius is the right fit, he’ll show you why. If it isn’t, he’ll tell you that too.

Sheri Orloff
Data Technician

Sheri manages the operational detail that makes Mocenius’s service possible — distributor file processing, database management, statement preparation, and quality control. With a background in administrative and technical services across publishing operations, she’s the person who catches the discrepancy before it reaches your authors.

Takes away the workload of royalty reporting and the author reports look great — many publishers’ royalty reports don’t.

This allows me to focus on other things, knowing that my royalties are being handled. This is a huge relief.
